Verizon’s Chaperone and Content Filtering
This application enables a parent to locate a child’s phone around specific areas such as school, home or playground. The parent receives a text message alert whenever his/her child enters or leaves the set Child Zone. In addition, Verizon’s Content Filtering service gives parents the ability to place restrictions on what type of content can be accessed on their own or their child's wireless device. The default is set to OFF, meaning no restrictions are activated at the time of purchase. User must switch setting to ON to activate restrictions. The primary account holder is the only one who can establish or change the settings on the account. He/she selects a Content Filtering setting for each phone on the account based on the following criteria:
- C 7+ (content recommended for children ages 7 and older)
This material contains little or no violence, no strong language, little or no sexual dialogue and situations and no themes of a mature nature. This content is considered suitable for children age 7 and above and parents can comfortably allow this content to be accessed by children 7 and above unattended.
- T 13+ (content recommended for teens ages 13 and older)
This material may contain mild coarse language, moderate violence, some sexuality or suggestive dialogue or themes that may not be appropriate for younger children. This content would be considered suitable for children 13 and above by most parents. Parents are cautioned against allowing children under 13 to access or view this content unattended.
- YA 17+ (content recommended for young adults ages 17 and older)
This content may contain one or more of the following: strong language, violence, nudity, sexual situations, or drug abuse. Many parents would consider this material unsuitable for children under 17 and parents are strongly cautioned against allowing children under 17 to access or view this content.
Verizon allows adults to turn all filtering off. Turning off the content filter provides access to all content accessible through the mobile phone, including content that may be considered objectionable. Some content may require additional authentication and/or age verification prior to access, download, use or purchase. Currently, the Content Filtering service can filter:
- 'Explicit' labeled music on V CAST Music
- Content on V CAST Video
- Websites accessible via wireless devices
- Messaging Short Codes
Content from other sources, including Get It Now, is not consistently filtered by the service at this time. The service does not filter calls or messages sent by customers to other customers (this includes any content created by customers and sent directly by them to other customers) or content already on phones at the time account holders turn on the service. Content Filtering works on most mobile phones, most PDAs and most PC cards. However, it will not work on BlackBerry® devices, any device with a static IP address or on search results provided through the Get It Now or Song ID search capabilities.
