T-Mobile’s Web Guard

Web Guard is an optional add-on feature that restricts access to adult-themed (18 or over) websites. It targets web access data plans, browse and search functions, as well as embedded websites that fall under pre-determined restricted categories. The default is set to OFF, meaning no restrictions are activated at the time of purchase. User must switch setting to ON to activate restrictions. The only exception is on KidConnect rate plans, which automatically come with Web Guard, where this feature is not optional and cannot be removed.

T-Mobile currently has 23 categories of content that are restricted with the Web Guard feature. They include pornography, sex education and mature content, among others. The complete list of restricted content includes:

 Abortion

 Lifestyle

 Violence

 Alcohol

 Mature Content

 Weapons

 Criminal Skills

 Occult

 Guns

 Cults

 Personals/Dating

 Ammunition

 Drugs

 Pornography

 Firearms Accessories

 Gambling

 Sex Education

 Knives

 Hacking

 Suicide

 Martial Arts

 Hate

 Tobacco

T-Mobile offers rate plans specifically for kids, called KidConnect, where Web Guard is automatic and cannot be deactivated.

T-Mobile’s KidConnect allows the primary account holder to set limits in order to avoid incurring overage charges. Once the included minute allotment in a given month is reached, the minutes are shut off until the next month. Only 911 calls are allowed until then.

T-Mobile accepts requests to change the Web Guard filters and block or unblock a site by emailing requests to contentcontrol2@t-mobile.com. T-Mobile uses a third party vendor to assist in reviewing and blocking content for the Web Guard feature. T-Mobile’s third party vendor maintains the list of blocked URLs and, although T-Mobile does not comment on specific content, they do provide a tool to capture and provide feedback to the vendor.
