AT&T’s Smart Limits

This feature allows users to limit the number of minutes, text messages and instant messages sent and received, as well as set certain hours in the day the phone can be used for messaging and browsing. It also restricts access to sites with mature content inappropriate for children by allowing the user to specify settings on their webpage called MEdia Net. In addition, it has Purchase Blocker, which prevents children from buying premium content that is direct-billed to the account holder such as ringtones, games, graphics, etc. The default is set to OFF, meaning no restrictions are activated at the time of purchase. User must switch setting to ON to activate restrictions.

AT&T does not offer content that is obscene or pornographic in nature. The Content Filter, when turned "on", will block some MEdia Net content that may not be appropriate for those under age 18—like chat and dating sites. AT&T has an internal content review process and is also working with CTIA on the industry effort to develop content ratings, which may be used in conjunction with Parental Controls in the future.

AT&T’s Smart Limits for Wireless allows a primary account holder to set limits for:

  • Number of text and instant messages
  • Dollar amount for downloadable purchases (ringtones, games and more)
  • Times of day the phone can be used for messaging, browsing and outbound calling
  • Who the phone can call or text (incoming and outgoing) by blocking and allowing certain numbers
  • Access to content inappropriate for children
